Visitors get told about Kihei Fourth Friday and think they've cracked the local calendar. People who live here know the party at Azeka Mauka is the loudest night of a rhythm that was already running Monday morning at the produce stand on the Suda Store lot. The Fourth Friday is a punctuation mark on a week that has its own shape.
That distinction matters more this summer than it usually does, because the daily anchors have quietly reshuffled. A shave ice institution just planted a second flag two blocks from where it started thirty-three years ago. The Saturday farmers market moved into the same parking lot. Da Playground and the MACC have booked out July and August. The result is a Kihei where you can string together six honest evenings without repeating a stop.
The Week Now Runs on Two Lots
Kukui Mall and Azeka carry more of the weekly load than they did a year ago. In February, Tobi's Poke & Shave Ice opened at 1819 South Kīhei Road in Kukui Mall next to Starbucks, bringing the North Shore favorite known for ultra-fresh poke and house-made sauces to South Maui. It is not a transplant so much as a homecoming. Owner Erica Gale noted that Aunty Tobi started Tobi's Shave Ice in 1992 just down the road from the new location, making the Kukui Mall address a return to South Maui roots.
Two doors of the same parking lot host Ko Mahi'ai Makeke, the Kukui Mall farmers market where local growers share fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, flowers, and fresh fish across from Kalama Park. It runs Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon and Tuesday afternoons 4 to 7 p.m. Half a mile north, the daily Farmers Market of Maui at 61 South Kihei Road, in the Suda Store lot, keeps a Monday through Saturday schedule that most weekly markets can't match.

Fourth Friday, Read Correctly
The county page will tell you the basics. Piikea Avenue closes to vehicle traffic starting at 5:30 p.m., with signage reminding drivers no cars will be allowed on Piikea during the event. Free parking is available less than one block away at Azeka Makai, Kihei Plaza, and St Theresa Church. That is the visitor briefing.
The resident version is different. Fourth Friday is the one night a month when the Azeka Mauka lot becomes a two-block food court and the entertainment is booked in advance, not improvised. Last July's edition set the template that still runs: the Arlie Asiu Band and Cam Ferguson on the main stage, Missy Aguilar in the Food Court, Maui's Classic and Collector's Cars on display near the Keiki Zone, and a Keiki Zone featuring balloon twisting, arts and crafts, 4 Kids Quick Science, and Legos. The classic car row, in particular, is a detail worth planning around if you have kids who care more about a lifted 4Runner than another balloon animal.
The timing quirk locals watch for: the July 2026 Fourth Friday lands on the 24th, and the August edition on the 28th. If you have out-of-town family arriving mid-August and want them to see the version of Kihei you actually live in, aim their flights so they clear the airport by Friday afternoon.
What's Booked Around the Corner
Da Playground Maui, the venue tucked into the Kihei industrial strip, has quietly become the summer's most active mid-size room. The next eight weeks stack up like this:

These are the confirmed Kihei-area shows on the summer calendar, with SOJA at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center following in October and John Mulaney at Castle Theater in December. What matters for residents is that the mid-week and weekend options no longer require the trip to Kahului. Two of the biggest August dates fall on the same Friday, so pick your poison early.
The Kukui Mall Effect
Watch what has happened to one shopping center over eighteen months. Kukui Mall now holds Tobi's, Ko Mahi'ai Makeke twice a week, and a Cool Cat Cafe location that filled the space Sansei used to occupy. The Cool Cat opening followed the August 2023 wildfires that claimed the original Front Street restaurant, with founder Sean Corpuel reopening in South Maui just ten months after the fires. The Kukui Mall build-out is awash in red and chrome and nostalgia, with easier parking than the Lahaina location ever had, more seating, a larger game room, and space for private parties.

Three years ago, Kukui Mall was the "other" South Kihei Road center. As of this summer, it is arguably the busiest walkable block in town on a Saturday morning between eight and noon: a farmers market, a shave ice line, and a diner all working the same lot.
A Two-Week Plan Without Leaving the 96753
If you want a working template for the next fortnight, this is what a resident-scale summer stretch looks like using only what is currently open and booked:
- Saturday morning: Ko Mahi'ai Makeke at Kukui Mall by 8:30, then shave ice at Tobi's before the line settles in.
- Tuesday afternoon: Second run at Ko Mahi'ai Makeke, 4 to 7, for anything you missed Saturday.
- Friday, July 24: Fourth Friday at Azeka Mauka. Arrive by 5:45 to park at Azeka Makai and walk over before Piikea closes.

The pattern behind all of it is worth naming. Kihei's most durable places are not the ones with the biggest signs on South Kihei Road. They are the ones that show up on the same schedule every week, in the same two lots, run by people who have been at it for decades. Fourth Friday is the loud version of that. Tuesday at 4:30 is the quiet one. Both are the same town.
